How to Check if Your Windows 11 License is Retail, OEM, or Volume

Not all Windows product keys are created equal. When purchasing or using Windows 11, your license falls into one of three distinct distribution channels: Retail, OEM, or Volume (MAK/KMS).

Understanding which license type you hold determines whether you can transfer your activation when upgrading your motherboard or building a brand-new PC in the future.

The Differences Between License Channels

• Retail: The highest-tier consumer license. Purchased directly or through certified partners. You can transfer it between PCs whenever you build or buy a new computer.
• OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer): Keys bound permanently to the first motherboard they activate. If your motherboard dies, the license dies with it.
• Volume: Licenses intended for corporations and schools. Unethical sellers often resell Volume keys illegally; Microsoft regularly disables them in batches.

How to Check Your License Channel Using Command Prompt

1. Press Windows Key + R, type cmd, and press Enter.
2. In the command prompt window, type: slmgr -dli and hit Enter.
3. A Windows Script Host popup window will appear within two seconds.
4. Look at the line labeled Description:
   • If it says RETAIL channel: You have a full, transferable license.
   • If it says OEM_DM channel: It is tied to your PC's motherboard.
   • If it says VOLUME_KMSCLIENT or VOLUME_MAK: It belongs to an enterprise pool.
