How to Fix Microsoft Office 'Unlicensed Product' and Activation Errors

Opening Word or Excel only to discover your documents are locked in "Read-Only" mode due to an "Unlicensed Product" or "Subscription Expired" banner is a major productivity roadblock.

This issue commonly happens when a pre-installed 30-day trial expires, or when an old school/work account token conflicts with a newly installed Office suite.

Step 1: Check System Date & Time

An incorrect clock on your computer will cause SSL handshake errors with Microsoft activation servers. Ensure Set time automatically is turned ON in Windows Settings > Time & Language.

Step 2: Clear Expired Office Licenses (The OSPP Script Fix)

If you previously had multiple Office trials installed, remnants of old keys often block new ones from validating. Remove ghost licenses with this official Microsoft command:

1. Close all Office programs.
2. Open Command Prompt as Administrator.
3. Navigate to the Office directory by entering:
   cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" (or Program Files (x86) for 32-bit).
4. Type: cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus and press Enter. This lists all installed keys and their last 5 digits.
5. Find the expired trial key and remove it by running: cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:XXXXX (where XXXXX is the last 5 characters).

Once expired ghost keys are cleared, launch Microsoft Word, click on File > Account > Change License, and enter your genuine lifetime product key. Your apps will reactivate immediately with unrestricted editing features.
